Technology adoption:

Co-creating and prototyping a scalable solution

The challenge

Oil sands mine shovel operators lacked immediate performance feedback, which resulted in haul trucks not being properly loaded. This gap in information resulted in more than $100M in lost production, as well as increased wear and tear on the trucks.

Our approach

SP&G implemented a human-centered design to bring miners, technology experts and original equipment manufacturers together using a co-creative process. Grounded in operator needs, we were able to rapidly prototype and test solutions to deliver real-time and actionable data to the shovel cab. This approach allowed us to demonstrate feasibility quickly to prove value to both executive leaders and field workers.

Results & impact

  1. $100M in increased annual revenue
  2. Deployed first prototype shovel in 8 weeks
  3. Scaled deployment across shovel fleet within a year
  4. Enhanced collaboration between business, IT and a complex set of vendors
This was challenging and our business partners didn’t think we could do it. We had bold ambitions but had not yet delivered a big win for our program. Shawn and his team brought the skills and approach to get the results. They were great to work with and provided just the right information so that our leadership had what they needed to support the work and remove roadblocks.
